The 55th District of Berkeley County was one of the first areas of West Virginia to be settled by colonists, men and women who had crossed a globe in search of a better life. From the Swearingen House, built in 1757, at the site of what is believed to be the first mill in West Virginia, to the Falling Waters Battlefield, where “Stonewall” Jackson and J.E.B. Stuart fought their first battle of The Civil War, reminders of our rich history can be found across our scenic landscape. Throughout the years, the residents of the 55th have survived the challenges of history by relying on their faith, families, and sense of community.
In the past decade, the 55th District has seen another surge in “settlement,” as families have come to the area seeking what families have historically sought — and found — in the 55th: a better life. In a world that can often be cold and impersonal, the 55th District offers its residents, new and old, the opportunity to be a part of a community that cares about its members, welcomes hard work, and values its land and heritage. History has challenged that sense of community on several occasions, but the residents of the 55th have always won out.
In recent years, fast and dramatic change has come to the 55th District, and change again looms on the horizon. Over the last 25 years, the District’s voice in House of Delegates has been a weak one. In a State Legislature where a Democratic majority sets the legislative agenda, our Republican delegate has been marginalized. The 55th District has been recognized as the fastest growing District in the State of West Virginia. If we are going to take control of our destiny, the time is now. It is time for a new delegate… a delegate that understands and treasures the history and community of the 55th District… a delegate that can help us meet the challenges of the future by bringing our unique issues, concerns, and ideas to Charleston with a clear and strong voice… a delegate named Donn Marshall, who will make government work for the people of the 55th District.
